Self-care is the act of taking care of your physical, emotional and mental well-being. It is important and an integral part to health. However, with hectic schedules and busy lifestyles, self-care may so often be neglected or viewed as challenging to put into practice. We can all start by recognizing our personal needs and taking steps to meet them. Take focus on what makes you feel nourished and happy, know what works for you and what you need to feel and function at your best.
We’ve rounded up a list of activities with tips to inspire and get you started on your self-care journey. You can use these as your to-do goals and check them off when you achieve them. Tweak it into your lifestyle, adopt what resonate with you and progressively add on more!
- Get 8 hours of sleep Getting an adequate amount of sleep and cultivating healthy sleeping habits can help promote mental and physical wellness. Try setting an alarm to remind that it’s almost time to get to bed and dedicate a decent amount of time to wind down to your night routine. If your mind is racing while you’re trying to sleep, you can keep a notebook nearby to jot down your thoughts and clear your mind.
- Do a workout Fitness goals that are too ambitious will mostly leads to drop-outs. If you have always dreaded working out, try starting with doing something simple and small like aiming to do only 5 sit-ups today, then increase a little each day and make a habit of it, then implement small improvements along the way.
- Keep a gratitude journal Keeping a gratitude journal can help improve positive thinking. Try writing down 3 things that you are grateful for every morning and 3 good things that happened in the day before you call it a night. If writing isn't your preferred method of journaling, try a different way such as a gratitude voice memo, video, or photo gallery.

indulge in weekly face mask Cultivating a consistent skincare regimen by taking the time to care for your skin can be a way to prioritize yourself and to practice mindfulness. Reserve time out to soothe and treat your skin to a face mask or skin treatment weekly. You can also try masking at the beginning of a stressful week or the night before a stressful day. - Hydrate with 8 glasses of water Water is vital for our body to function and drinking sufficient water daily can help you feel better. Make a conscious effort to load up on hydration throughout the day. Try to have at least 2 glasses of water first thing in the morning, and 1 glass before every meal and snacks. Keep a water bottle within sight, and you can also mark the bottle with hourly intervals to serve as a visual reminder to encourage water intake and to track your progress.

and mindfulness Taking time out for a few minutes a day to meditate forces our body and mind to slow down which brings a level of inner peace, allowing us to reconnect with ourselves. A simple way to meditate is to find a comfortable place where you won't be disturbed, sit down and slowly bring your attention to your body and breathing, when your mind wanders, try to pull it back to the physical sensation of the breath. - Try something new Make plans to try something new. By adding new and novel experiences, you are breaking out of the monotony of routines and opening up possibilities for enjoyment, creativity, and a chance to get to know yourself better, or to gain a new perceptive, a sense of accomplishment.
- Cook a fresh meal Cooking can be therapeutic and creative, and by taking the time and effort into mindfully creating something that we consume, we are nourishing ourselves both physically and mentally. View cooking as a way to express yourself and engage your senses. Cooking is also a great way we can get more nutrients, keep track of our calories intake and have better control over where the food comes from.
- Read a book When we’re feeling anxious and overwhelmed, sometimes reading a book could be an ideal way to calm our nerves. Immersing ourselves in a book can also help us tap into our imagination, which impacts our day-to-day creativity. To get started, you can create a list of novels you’ve always wanted to read, or a list of books to learn something about a topic or field of study that you are interested in.
- Take a slow bath If you are constantly overwhelmed and leading a busy lifestyle, you’re most likely not paying attention to yourself and your needs. Unwind the day’s stress with a hot bath as a way to live slowly and relish life. You can turn bathing into a self-care ritual by calming your mind and relaxing the body. Use the moment to process your thoughts, let go of emotions and increase your self-awareness.
- Tidy up clutters Your physical environment influences your emotions, behavior and decision-making process. Create a space that you’ll feel good in without getting hindered by things. Write down the things that are making you feel disorganized, prioritize them and make a commitment to tackle them one at a time. You can start by clearing the flat surfaces and designating a “home” for all your belongings. Aim to always store them back to where they belong after using it to create organizing habits.
